The First Nepali Film and Documentary.

The first Nepali-language film is Saty Harishchandra*. D.B. Pariyar produced it in 1950 A.D. (2007 B.S.) in Calcutta. Saty Harishchandra by D.B. Pariyar is the first film shot in the Nepali language. This film was shot in Calcutta, India.

However, looking at the history of Nepali cinema, the film ‘Aama’ (Mother), which was released on October 7, 1964 (2021 B.S. Ashoj 22), is considered the first Nepali film.
At that time, the then *Shree 5* government’s Department of Information produced the film *Aama*, which was directed by Hira Singh Khatri, while Shivshankar Manandhar and Bhuvan Chand performed the lead roles.

Similarly, Nepal’s first documentary was made by Hira Singh Khatri in 1961 (2018 B.S.) about the 42nd auspicious birthday celebration of King Mahendra.

Likewise, Nepal’s first color film was *Kumari* (released in 1977 A.D. / 2034 B.S.), produced by Prem Bahadur Basnet.
